Fitness Instructors
This course is ideal if you want to specialise and work with older adults and it will give you the skills to teach chair based exercise in a studio class, community centres and nursing homes. It will also give you a vast amount of knowledge to enable you to offer adaptations to clients or members of your class who have physical limitations. The course covers the ageing process and the effects on bones, joints, heart, lungs and nervous system along with conditions associated with ageing which include osteoporosis, arthritis, stroke and Parkinson's disease and their implications for exercise are discussed.
It will give you the knowledge and confidence to teach a range of 17 chair-based exercises aimed at promoting mobility and increasing strength to help aid everyday function of the frailer adult.
Health & Social Care Assistants
This course is ideal if you are currently working with older adults and wish to help them maintain their everyday function and mobility. Our tutors are experienced in working with health professionals and will guide and mentor you to help gain the skills to teach chair based exercise in a community centre, nursing home or similar environment. It is fun and enjoyable and will give you the confidence to help promote mobility and function in frailer older adults.

The exercises contained within this module will also be helpful if you are teaching a mainstream Older Adult class as it will give you a wide range of seated adaptations for clients who present with a wide range of conditions e.g. osteoporosis.

Prerequisites for this course:
Fitness Instructors:
- It is recommended that students have been teaching for at least 3 months
- Provide evidence of NVQ Level 2 Certification
Health & Social Care Assistants
Currently working in one of the following sectors:
- Social care/health care support
- Sheltered housing
- Physiotherapy and occupational therapy assistants
- Activity coordinators
- Volunteer workers
- Community based programme for the elderly
Course assessment format:
- Assessment will take place on the last day of the course
- Practical assessment based on the prescribed chair-based exercises (plan, teach and evaluate)
- Complete CYQ Worksheets
