This course is ideal if you are currently working with older adults and wish to help them maintain their everyday function and mobility. Our tutors are experienced in working with health professionals and will guide and mentor you to help gain the skills to teach chair based exercise in a community centre, nursing home or similar environment. It is fun and enjoyable and will give you the confidence to help promote mobility and function in frailer older adults.

Currently working in one of the following sectors:
- Social care/health care support
- Sheltered housing

Course Content:
The course covers the ageing process and the effects on bones, joints, heart, lungs and nervous system along with conditions associated with ageing which include osteoporosis, arthritis, stroke and Parkinson's disease and their implications for exercise are discussed. It will give you the knowledge and confidence to teach a range of 17 specific chair-based exercises aimed at promoting mobility and increasing strength to help aid everyday function of the frailer adult. It also covers exercise and osteoporosis, arthritis, stroke and Parkinson's disease and the implications of exercises on these conditions.
The course uses an evidence-based approach to ensure that exercise programmes aiming to promote independence and/or reduce the risk of falls among older people are specific, progressive and effective. This course can form an important component of a local falls prevention programme and equip health professionals with the knowledge and skills they need to promoting independence and improve quality of life.

Course assessment format:
- Assessment will take place on the last day of the course
- Practical assessment based on the prescribed chair-based exercises (plan, teach and evaluate)
