FITNESS DIRECTOR HOLDS HYDRO-SPIN EVENT TO THANK HOSPITAL FOR SAVING HIS LIFE

A fitness director is holding a spinning event with a difference to thank hospital staff for saving his life.

Ryan Graham, 23, runs Staffordshire based company Hydro Fitness Solutions, which specialises in exercise in water, and is holding the Hydrospinning event on 13th and 14th November 2010.

Due to popular demand and widespread support from individuals and businesses in Staffordshire, one of the event venues is being moved from Nottinghamshire.  The 12 hour Saturday session on 13th NOVEMBER 2010 will now be held at ABBOTS BROMLEY SCHOOL FOR GIRLS.  The venue for SUNDAY 14th NOVEMBER is still being held at the DUKERIES LEISURE CENTRE IN OLLERTON in Nottinghamshire.

The world’s first HYDROSPINATHON will raise money for the Adult Intensive Care Unit at the Queen’s Medical Centre. Participants will cycle on specially-made static exercise bikes, called Hydrorider Aqua Bikes.

In February 2010, Ryan was involved in a road traffic accident and bones in both his leg were shattered, his lower leg muscles were damaged and he had large amounts of muscular atrophy. His liver was bleeding into his stomach and he had to undergo extensive skin grafts. He was told that he would not be able to walk for at least six months, would probably struggle to fully regain his previous fitness levels and was likely to be left with a limp in his walk.
During his rehabilitation programme, Ryan did a large amount of water-based physiotherapy. He explained: “I started training in March with buoyancy aided deep water walking, progressing after two weeks to unaided shallow aqua walking.  By the end of March I began walking with crutches rather than a wheelchair.”

Ryan, from Checkley in the Staffordshire Moorlands, then created his own rehabilitation programme using the hydro-fitness idea his company had introduced the previous year.

Ryan said: “As a direct result of the incorporation of the Hydrorider Aqua Bike into my training programme by June, just four months after my accident, I was back to full fitness, walking unaided and without a limp and back to instructing a range of water based exercises, particularly hydro-spin.”

He added: “I am organising the ‘Hydrospinathon’ to say a huge thank you to Mr Andrew Taylor and his team at the Queen’s Medical Centre for their expertise and dedication and for their part in my recovery.” “Support for the event has been overwhelming and we are optimistic about reaching our £10,000 target.  I would really like to thank people for their enthusiasm and support.”

We are still looking for  businesses and individuals that would like to get involved in the event, by being participants or through sponsorship, anyone wishing to help in any way can call Mark Baker, Business Development Manager at Hydro Fitness Solutions on 01538 755 377.

All the money raised at the event will be given to Nottingham University Hospitals Charity, which exists to support the work that takes place at the Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital campuses.

Donations to the Charity are used to enhance patient care at NUH by providing added extras such as specialist equipment, medical research and staff training.
